Friends International Economic disparity, cross-border labour, coerced or voluntary begging, and human trafficking are very real and complicated issues in Southeast Asia. Rural people in Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand, often flow into cities in search of work. Many, for the first time in their lives, find themselves on their own, without the support of friends and family. Friends International provides necessary support and creates opportunity for the marginalized or displaced youth that result from these economic migrations. Originally formed in Cambodia, the organization now operates in Thailand, Laos, Malaysia, Honduras, and Egypt. In Vientienne, Laos, Friends operates several vocational training facilities including the training restaurant Mak Phet. As one of the best eateries in the city, Mak Phet serves as the organization’s program ambassador, letting patrons know about the organization’s language center, clinic, and mechanic training garages. The hope is that, through these hands-on programs, at-risk youth can forage a path to individual stability.
